Ok, I won't bore you with the statistics, data and reasoning. I am just going to cut straight to the point... repeating, reusing and recycling math in your classroom is KEY. It's so very important, beeeyond important.
Now, I know exactly what you are thinking... you already have a lot of standards to cover and not much time to cover them. How is it possible to review previous years content, content from earlier in the year AND new content? Well, to be honest I haven't completely mastered this feat. I hope, however, to provide you with a few tips and suggestions on how to implement a few strategies within your classroom. For the first part of this blog series, I am going to focus on weekly homework assignments.
What are weekly homework assignments?
Every week, I provide my students with a worksheet containing 12 problems. The questions cover review content (in my case 6th grade information) and information that has already been covered in the current year. Students have one week to complete the worksheet with a 100%. Students are allowed to use their resources (notes, textbooks, chromebooks, etc.) to assist them on any questions, if necessary. Students are able to turn them in several times throughout the week to get them checked (during class, at lunch, during study hall, etc.). They are allowed to do this as many times as necessary throughout the week until it is a 100%.
Why should it be completed with a 100%?
Like I said at the beginning, reviewing + recycling information is key! With the weekly review assignments I am constantly able to review concepts throughout the school year. If I notice students struggling on a particular topic, I make sure I put a question or two on the next weekly homework assignment. If I don't make the requirement of a 100%, then the students might not put forth the time and effort to complete all problems.
How do you grade the assignment?
The students don't receive a grade for completing the assignment, but they do take a 5 question quiz every week over the assignment. I make the assignment due on Tuesday and then every Wednesday they take a quick quiz over 5 randomly selected questions. If they completed the assignment, then they should be able to score a 5 out of 5.

What does a weekly homework assignment look like?
You can customize weekly homework assignment to best fit the needs of your learners. Perhaps you will make more questions or maybe fewer questions.
